Sega Mega Drive is coming back

Pokemon is all the range, Nintendo is bringing back the NES and now it has been revealed the Mega Drive is making a comeback, complete with 80 games built in.

You would forgiven for thinking we had jumped back to the 1990s, but the popular console really is coming back – complete with 80 games built into the shrunken down system, as well as a cartridge slot so any originals you did happen to hang on to will still work.

The console is already available to pre-order online for £50 ahead of release in October and follows in the footsteps of Nintendo’s announcement that a Classic NES – also a miniature version – is coming later this year.

The announcement is all in aid of the 25th anniversary of the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog, and unsurprisingly that is one of the games confirmed for the mini Mega Drive, along with every other Sonic game for the Mega Drive, Mortal Kombat, Echo and Streets of Rage.

However, there is a caveat. This Mega Drive is not being made by Sega, but by a third party – ATGames – unlike the NES, which Nintendo is making themselves.

Also, while the Classic NES will run via HDMi cable, the Mega Drive requires rather old-fashioned AV cables to connect to your TV.

But, there is also a handheld version of the console on the way too, also for £50, but this won’t run cartridges.
